Yesterday I wrote about hiding your valuables in cleverly designed safes. Today, I'd like to continue on that track of hidden security items, only this time, let's talk about cameras and surveillance. As a stay at home mom of a two year old, I've been very fortunate to never have to rely on strangers to watch my child. But I do have friends and relatives who have either placed their children in daycare, or who have hired nannies to come into their homes to babysit their children. I'm sure we've all seen the news stories of nannies behaving badly as they were caught on film. Abuse, theft, and other inappropriate activities have all been caught by wise parents who installed "nanny cams." I highly recommend installing cameras and surveillance equipment if you have any type of stranger in your home on a regular basis. The risk is just too great nowadays to not protect yourself. I personally don't think I could ever allow someone into my home to watch my child without my being there, but if I did, I would definitely install cameras to watch what was taking place during my absence. Home security cameras are also excellent tools if you have caregivers taking care of elderly parents at home. The bottom line is, make the investment to secure your home and to protect your family from the hired help you allow inside your home, because screenings, background checks, and references are not guarantees that the person you choose to take care of your loved ones is always safe or trustworthy.
